The original large stone sculpture was found in 1978, during excavations that uncovered the remains of the Templo Mayor of Mexico City - Tenochtitlán, where it is currently on display. 

According to Aztec mythology, the Goddess Coyolxauhqui (which means "the one painted with bells on her face", who represents the moon,  She is ritually annihilated and dismembered by her brother Huitzilopochtli, the god of war. The piece appears to date from the reign of Axayacatl.
